By taking open space and breaking it up into a series of different sized spaces, the homeless of skid row will begin to see public open space as a place of gathering rather than of lonely refuge. The housing complex is divided into a series of clusters, in which residents will begin to interact with others. Two of the cluster types are more exposed to the street and central courtyard and two revolve around more private interior spaces. Residents will be able to access three types of courtyards: a small porch-like space for two residents; a medium-sized space; and a larger courtyard. The goal is for the residents to
increase their interactions and ultimately become part of their community.
