Border Insecurity    Port of Los Angeles

Security at ports cost the US millions of dollars a year, yet the security measures in place would do little to prevent what Americans fear most, a dirty bomb attack. That is because any significant increase in security will ultimately slow down productivity and affect commerce. This new radiation detection and inspection center would become part of the port infrastructure and would be able to scan containers immediately rather than days later, as is current practice. However, since the risk of such attack is very low, this structure would essentially become the public interface for security procedures at the port, while allowing commerce flow to continue as usual.
